Know the difference between nicotine, tobacco-free nicotine, and synthetic nicotine.

Starting April 14, 2022, synthesized nicotine manufacturers must ensure compliance with the FDA. The FDA can now regulate tobacco products containing nicotine from any source.

No store can give out free samples of products with synthesized nicotine. The rule makes it illegal to sell tobacco products in person or online. “Modified risk tobacco products” can’t be sold in the U.S. without FDA approval.

But what about synthetic nicotine? Is synthetic nicotine safe? Is it the same as tobacco-free nicotine?

Is synthetic nicotine bad for you? Should there be a synthetic nicotine ban in place? What is synthetic nicotine, exactly?

What is a synthetic nicotine product?

What is synthetic nicotine? Synthetic or artificial nicotine is produced in chemical laboratories. Although it doesn’t come from tobacco plants, both still have the same molecular composition.

Such type of nicotine does not have any tobacco leaves during the manufacturing process. To produce it, the researchers start from scratch.

The people who manufacture artificial nicotine that isn’t made from tobacco say that their products are purer. However, there is no proof to back up this claim. No one even used it because it was too expensive to make.

Recently, this type of nicotine became a popular primary ingredient for flavored vapes. Artificially-made nicotine is also called tobacco-free nicotine.

What is the difference between tobacco and artificial nicotine?

What is synthetic nicotine compared to traditional nicotine? Synthetic and nicotine from tobacco have molecules with the same chemical structure. They have the same effects.

In the past, artificial nicotine products contained “tobacco free nicotine” labels. There is no need to use tobacco plants to feel the effects not made from tobacco. Also, they have more flavors.

The manufacturers also said that a different set of rules governed it. But it’s not mostly from smoking, so the Tobacco Control Act doesn’t apply to them. It turned into a way out. But a bipartisan law gave FDA the power to control synthesized nicotine.

The extraction of non-tobacco nicotine and nicotine comes from different sources. Nicotine from tobacco comes from tobacco leaves and the tobacco plant. Meanwhile, synthesized nicotine uses chemical synthesis to produce it.

Is synthesized nicotine safe?

Manufacturers market synthesized nicotine to be harmless. They say it is purer. It does not have any residuals from the tobacco plant. Still, it is highly addictive, and responsible usage is a must.

Most synthesized nicotine does not have any traces of tobacco. Also, it contains no extra flavor or scent associated with smoking. Manufacturers generally use more flavorings to cover up the taste of nicotine. But with this nicotine, this is not necessary.

Tobacco-free nicotine products have become popular among teenagers. Studies have shown that 80% of youth have used tobacco. According to a report, they usually began using a flavored product. 97% of youth who vape use flavors.

Artificial nicotine isn’t dangerous at all, or at least not very much. Its effects aren’t as well known as those of nicotine, which comes from tobacco. But people worry that synthesized nicotine might have solvents they don’t know about.

A “tobacco-free” label does not mean that it does not contain nicotine. It is also impossible to know the chemical substances included in the e-liquid. Ingredient labels may not be accurate at all.

Is synthetic nicotine stronger?

Non-tobacco nicotine and natural nicotine share the exact molecular structure. These products have the same stimulant effect on the body. No studies show synthesized nicotine being stronger than nicotine from tobacco.

So which is better?

Non-tobacco nicotine has recently been known by many. It is famous mainly among young vapers. They think that enjoying the flavors is enough to take risks. Tobacco-free nicotine is also marketed as high-tech, even though it has existed for a while.

This “hip and cool” branding tends to be dangerous. There is still too little scientific data on synthesized nicotine. Consumers must maintain precaution because there is no study on its long-term effects.

It is also alarming how artificial nicotine has been introduced to young consumers. They like vaping with flavorings, even if they didn’t smoke combustible cigarettes before.

With FDA regulation comes some amount of control. But aggressive marketing related to artificial nicotine products has already penetrated the market.

Only a few vape companies spend more resources on research than marketing. They want to make sure that only adults can buy their products.
