10 Insights Into Adult Vaping Customers

Technomic conducted a survey as part of Bidi Vapor’s Premarket Tobacco Product Application (PMTA) between August to September 2020. The survey had 1,001 adult respondents who use e-cigarettes or electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS). They were given a series of online questions relating to their electronic nicotine product usage, the impact of flavors, preferences, smoking less or quitting, and general perceived changes in the state of their health when using ENDS.

Categorized into groups, the adult participants included Converts, or adult vape users who used to smoke traditional cigarettes; Dual Users, which are currently using both cigarettes and ENDS; New Singular Users, people who never smoked cigarettes but currently use ENDS; and lastly, Past Users, people who have smoked cigarettes and have used ENDS but presently do not use any of the two. Here are ten insights obtained from the recent Technomic survey:

1. Perception of Lower Risk

Among the Converts, 60% have reported that they are daily ENDS adult users. Their primary motivation for their transition is the perception of ENDS as less harmful to themselves and others around them. 2. Flavors Made the Transition Easier
Roughly 42% of the Converts also cited that the options and variety of flavors available played a huge factor in their decision to switch from smoking to vaping.

3. Lowering Cigarette Use

Nine out of ten adult participants reported a dramatic decrease in cigarette use with the use of ENDS.  Bidi Vapor, along with its product, the BIDI^® Stick, positions itself as a quality nicotine provider, offering more options for nicotine users.

4. Flavors Play a Big Role in Switching Completely from Cigarettes
Forty-seven percent (47%) said their ENDS use has allowed them to either reduce cigarette consumption or transition completely to vaping from cigarettes.

5. Possible Negative Effects of Flavor Bans
Twenty-six (26%) percent of the participants who currently use flavored products anticipate that they might return to smoking traditional combustible cigarettes if flavor bans are enacted, and their areas are affected.

6. Improving Health?
Among the adult respondents, 36% self-reported feeling healthier after switching to ENDS from cigarettes. Nearly half reported no noticeable physical health changes, positive or negative.

7. Huge Role of Flavors
More than half (60%) of all adult respondents pointed to the availability and variety of flavors as the main reason for them to try ENDS products and start their lifestyle switch. This number suggests that flavors play a vital role in customers’ decisions in selecting such products. Meanwhile, 59% point flavors as the overall reason for using ENDS products.

8. Nicotine Levels
Around 71% of the adult survey participants claim that the nicotine levels in ENDS and vape products have helped them reduce their cravings and urge to use and go back to traditional combustible cigarettes.

9. Shared Concern for Underage Use of ENDS
The majority (63%) of the group also agreed and expressed concern over underage access to nicotine products, citing peer pressure or the need to “fit in” as possible reasons for trying ENDS products.

10. Importance of Strict Policies

Half of the adult respondents believed that age-verification and other age-gating measures help prevent underage access to vape products. Huge Potential for Lifestyle Transition for Adults

ENDS products have huge potential to benefit the overall health of the population by helping adult cigarette smokers who are unable or unwilling to quit tobacco and nicotine use altogether transition to potentially less risky alternatives. Much research still needs to be done.
